Qatar Airways can now access a new route over international waters in the Gulf controlled by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, the world aviation agency announced.

The Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has been working with "various Middle Eastern states to ensure equitable access to airspace for Qatar-registered aircraft" since sanctions were announced on June 5, ICAO spokesman Anthony Philbin said on Tuesday.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) will suspend its thrice-weekly Manila-Abu Dhabi services from 8 July onwards.

The carrier says the suspension is being made as it "undertakes route assessment initiatives." Earlier this month, PAL also announced the suspension of its Cebu-Los Angeles services on 30 May, as part of a capacity rationalisation. FlightGlobal schedules data shows that the airline competes with Etihad Airways on the Manila-Abu Dhabi route.

Guangzhou-based low-cost carrier 9 Air has applied to expand its operations beyond the country.

Speaking to FlightGlobal in Shanghai, Juneyao Airlines chairman Wang Junjin says that its 9 Air subsidiary is in the midst of seeking regulatory approval for international operations, and will seek traffic rights on international routes once it receives the necessary approvals.

Destinations such as Singapore, Bali, Japan, South Korea and Thailand are being considered.

China Eastern Airlines has applied for traffic rights on the Chengdu-Irkutsk route.

The carrier plans to launch daily services using Airbus A320 family jets from July. The Civil Aviation Administration of China is calling for parties with comments to submit them by 25 May. FlightGlobal schedules data shows that China Eastern will be the only operator on the route.
